The Origin of Sithis: Part 2
I walked across the bloodstained room and opened the door. Just my luck, there in front of
me stood 4 Jade Brothers.
"Well, what do we have here..." the leader said, but he stopped for two reasons.
One, he had noticed that his buddy was dead in the chair by the table, and secondly, not
knowing what else to do, I had kick him between the legs. It took several seconds for his
buddies to react, but by then I was halfway down the street. I ran as fast as I could, but
I could hear the Jade Brotherhoods giving chase. I stumbled, and as I did, a fireball went
flying over my head. Suddenly, I slammed against a wall, and couldn't get away from
it. My shirt had been pinned to the wall.
The Jade Brothers walked towards me, as I struggled to free my shirt. One of them drew his
sword, I cringed and closed my eyes, anticipating the blow. It never came.
I heard a booming voice call out, "You will die!"
When I opened my eyes, I saw a battle raging before me, the Jade Brotherhood were fighting
a group of guards, led by a huge man in shining, silver armor. Every time he swung his sword,
another Jade Brother fell. I freed my shirt from the arrow, and watched in awe as this
warrior and the guards soundly defeated the Jade Brothers. Those few that remained ran,
screaming of a demon in silver armor.
As the guards were checking the bodies on the ground, the huge warrior walked over to me, and
took off his helmet.
"Well, what do we have here?" The warrior gave me a reassuring grin, several of his
teeth were missing. "Its alright, you're safe now. You may call me Uncle Noteeth. What
is your name?"
I don't know why I thought I should lie to this man, he seemed nice enough, but for some
reason I didn't want to tell him my name. So I said the first thing I could think of, a name
from one of my books.
"My name is Sithis"
"Well Sithis, where are your parents?"
I pointed to the bodies scattered around. "They killed them"
Uncle's smile faded. I turned away from him, tears welling up in my eyes.
He put his hand on my shoulder. "Where are they?"
I led Uncle and the guards through the streets, until I got to the apartment that used to be my
home. I stayed outside while Uncle and the guards went in and brought my parents out on blankets.
The guards dug graves in the little yard behind the apartment, and they were buried there. Later in
life, I would come back to this place and put gravestones there, but now, I just sat and watched as
the guards finished covering the graves.
Uncle walked up to me, "Do you have any other family you could stay with?"
I looked down at the ground. "No, not that I know of."
"Anywhere you know of you can stay?'
"I don't know"
Uncle stood and thought for a second, then asked, "Who killed that Jade Brother in there?"
I looked up. "I did."
"How"
I pulled the kamas out of my belt. "He was sleeping, I saw these on the table. Without thinking
about it, I stabbed him in the chest."
"I think I know somewhere you can go."
Several days later, Uncle Noteeth, who apparently has considerable influence with many people in
Cantha, took me to see a man by the name of Jinzo about joining the Shing Jea Monastery. Jinzo looked
me over, not being overly impressed with what he saw, until he looked me straight in the eyes.
I don't know what he saw there, but as soon as he did, he said, "I think he has potential to be
a decent assassin. I'll speak to Master Togo about him, and I'll get back to you." He left, and
a few hours later, came back, and told me that Master Togo had allowed me to enter Shing Jea. A new
chapter of my life was about to begin.
